 Damage description
cat 1 Damages are limited to shrubbery, trees, foliage and unanchored mobile homes. No real damage to building structures. Some damage is done to poorly constructed signs. Wave surge may cause flooding on coastal roads and minor pier damages. Small craft in unprotected anchorages may break moorings.
cat 2 Considerable damages to shrubbery and foliage, some trees are blown down Major structural damages to exposed mobile homes. Extensive damages occur to poorly constructed signs. Some damage to roofing materials, windows and doors but no major damage occurs to building structures. Coastal roads and may be flooded and cut-off by rising water 2-4 hours before the arrival of hurricane center. Considerable pier damages and Small craft in unprotected anchorages break moorings. Evacuation of some shoreline residences or low-lying island areas is required.
cat 3 Extended damages to all trees and shrubbery. Large trees and practically all poorly constructed signs are blown down. Buildings may have damages in roofing materials, window and doors. Some structural damages occur to small buildings, residences and utility buildings. All mobile homes are destroyed. Possible some minor failure in curtainwalls in framed buildings. Serious flooding occurs near the coast and many smaller structures are destroyed. Larger buildings are damaged by floating debris. Low-lying inland routes are flooded and cut-off by rising water 3-5 hours before the arrival of the hurricane center. Flat terrain continuously lower than 1.5 m or less above sea, is flooded inland up to 15 km or more. Evacuation of low-lying residences within several blocks of shoreline may be required.
cat 4 Most shrubs and trees and all signs are blown down. Buildings have extensive damages in roofing materials, window and doors. Complete failure of roof structures in many small residences. All mobile homes are destroyed. Possible failures in some building's curtainwalls. Flat terrain continuously lower than 3 m or less above sea, is flooded inland up to 10 km or more. Major damages occur to lower floors of structures near the shore due to flooding and floating debris. Low-lying inland routes are flooded and cut-off by rising water 3-5 hours before the arrival of the hurrican center. Major erosion of beach area occurs. A massive evacuation of buildings within 460 of the shoreline may be required. Buildings on low ground within 3 km of the coast may also be evacuated.
cat 5 Shrubs, trees and all signs are blown down. Considerable damage to roofs of buildings. Very severe and extensive window and door damage occurs. Complete failure of roof structures occurs on many residences and industrial buildings. Extensive shattering of unprotected glass in windows and doors occurs. Some complete buildings fail. Small buildings are overturned and blown over or away. All mobile homes are destroyed. Major damages to lower floors of all structures located less than 4.6 m above sea level and within 460 m of the shoreline. Low-lying inland routes are flooded and cut-off by rising water 3-5 hours before the arrival of the hurrican center. Major erosion of beaches occurs. Massive evacuation of residential areas on low ground within 16 km of the shoreline may be required!
